Working class women in their twenties have to make do with wages that are often lower than those of their male counterparts and often face great financial difficulties. For many, these secondary earnings are essential for family’s survival. Women of this period had no choice but to accept whatever work was available, as well as relying on institutional assistance when needed. Mothers were particularly vulnerable due to the lack of choice and support from society at large. The work life of women in their twenties is a reflection of the wider class system, where working class women have little or no choice but to accept the job opportunities available or risk poverty and hardship.

The progress of womens’ employment has been hindered by cultural norms, legal strictures, and the expectation that a woman will leave her job upon marriage. However, in the past 60 years there has been a dramatic rise in womens’ workforce participation with over 60 percent of women now participating in some form of work or study. This progress is largely thanks to the implementation of successful projects such as the Works Progress Administration and other programs which created jobs for countless women.

These programs have created a more respectful work environment for women. Companies have also made great efforts to promote gender equality, through policies such as equal pay and flexible working hours. Women in their 20s today are able to pursue their career aspirations without fear of discrimination, something which was not possible decades ago.
